Every fourth Thursday of the summer, AIGA Detroit has programmed a series of four informal "salons" centered around the business of design. We kicked off the series with "Cultivating a Successful Design Firm/Freelance Career" followed by our July salon "How to Self Promote". August's topic is "Non Client-Based Design Practices" and the experts for this salon will be Ryan Malloy, Stephanie Tardy and Nina Bianchi.

What are other ways that designers can use their talents to start a business? We'll talk about how you can set up a design practice that doesn't involve the traditional client/designer relationship. There are many business models out there and we'll discuss the different and interesting ways designers are working on their own.

The Experts:

Ryan Malloy
Ryan Molloy is a freelance designer, artist, and an assistant professor of graphic design at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Prior to teaching at Eastern he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin’s Design Division where he also received his MFA in Design. He is an educator and inter-disciplinary designer having practiced in fields of architecture and graphic design. His design work received an Art Directors Club Young Guns 5 award. In 2006 he edited and published a small run magazine titled Redaction, which was awarded Detroit AIGA Design Re:View best in show. In Fall 2008 his video work was featured in the OneDotZero film festival. In early 2009 he had solo exhibition at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, MI and co-organized the exhibition Dimension and Typography: A Survey of Letterforms in Space and Time in Chicago, IL. In addition to exhibiting locally, Ann Arbor/Detroit, Michigan, his work has also been exhibited at the Austin Museum of Digital Art, I Love Bytes at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries, and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. http://www.workroommolloy.com

Stephanie Tardy
Stephanie Tardy is one-fifth of the DIY collective Handmade Detroit, which serves as a hub for Detroit DIY makers and crafters -- producing events, connecting local artists and promoting a positive image of Detroit makers to a national audience. The collective also produces the Detroit Urban Craft Fair, which brings together indie makers and thousands shoppers in the heart of Detroit each year. She has been making colorful and one-of-a-kind paper goods and collage art in her solo company Phantom Limb since 2005. When not making stuff with her friends, she works in content strategy at Campbell-Ewald. She was named a "20 in their 20s" by Crain's Detroit in 2007.

Nina Bianchi
Nina Bianchi is currently an independent graphic designer practicing in Detroit. Since graduating from the College for Creative Studies, she has worked with various social, cultural, municipal and art-related groups, businesses and organizations locally and internationally. Her projects have ranged from corporate communications to political flyers to organizing small town talent shows. Most recently, she has enjoyed developing installation-based design/production processes and teaching Typography courses at the College for Creative Studies. She thrives on research, reading, collaboration and the proliferation of design as an agent for change.
