Big news for this year’s competition is a tiered pricing structure designed to make it easier for smaller agencies, studios and freelancers to participate.  Companies with 21 or more employees pay the standard entry fee; smaller shops with from 2 to 20 employees get a discount on entries (amount varies by discipline) and freelance creatives and one-person shops are eligible for an even greater reduction in their entry fee.

Other noteworthy changes to the ADC 97th Annual Awards include:

  • Creation of the ADC Design for Good award for excellence in work that fosters societal or political change.  This new reduced-fee subcategory exists within each of the categories, with the winner selected from among the top vote getting Design for Good entries in each category.
  • Once each jury has selected its ADC Gold, Silver and Bronze Cube winners, they will choose which Gold Cube winner stands out to receive an ADC Best in Discipline award.
  • The ADC Black Cube, formerly a Best in Discipline award, is now elevated to represent the Best in Show overall.
  • Freelancers can now enter for their contribution to a campaign or project created by an agency.  For example, a self-employed illustrator can now enter their work in the Design-Illustration category for illustrations they here hired to do by an agency for a brand’s print ad campaign.
  • The Design discipline now consists of categories for Illustration, Photography, Typography, Brand Communications Design, Publication Design, Experiential Design, Product Design, Packaging Design, Motion and Film Craft, Innovation and Design for Good.  Entries in each category are judged by a jury that includes members who are professionals in that particular category.

The ADC and AIGA Detroit are happy to announce a special 10% Entry Discount for all AIGA Detroit Members!  Simply use the following code when submitting your entries: AIGADET97

Penny Stamps Speaker Series – Jennifer Daniel https://detroit.aiga.org/penny-stamps-speaker-series-jennifer-daniel/ https://detroit.aiga.org/penny-stamps-speaker-series-jennifer-daniel/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 18:45:23 +0000 https://detroit.aiga.org/?p=76780 Talk to Me – OCTOBER 12, 2017

Jennifer Daniel is an illustrator, graphic designer, author, and regular contributor to the New York Times and the New Yorker. As a Creative Director at Google and former graphics editor at the New York Times she explores both verbal and written language as a means of personal expression and regularly questions how she justifies contributing to capitalism. Acclaimed for her conceptual, clever, and content-driven approach to illustration and writing, her work has also been widely published. Her latest book, The Origin of Almost Everything, explores the universe through charts and diagrams, data, and facts. Fast Company calls her “a genius at information design” and her latest book, “the best-looking science book ever created.” Her work has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, D&AD (Design & Art Direction), Malofiej (infographic awards), American Illustration, the Society of Publication Designers, Society of Illustrators, and AIGA. Mother of twin toddlers, Daniel describes the intersection of career and parenthood: “Still working towards a nomination for Mom of the Year.”

Supported by AIGA Detroit and the Detroit Creative Corridor Center, stewards of the UNESCO City of Design designation.

Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place on Thursdays at 5:10 pm at the historic Michigan Theater, located at 603 E. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor, and are free of charge and open to the public.

House Industries – PAST FORWARD Exhibit https://detroit.aiga.org/house-industries-exhibit-henry-ford/ https://detroit.aiga.org/house-industries-exhibit-henry-ford/#respond Mon, 10 Apr 2017 17:01:12 +0000 http://detroit.aiga.org/?p=73557

The Henry Ford commissioned House Industries to develop a three-dimensional sculpture for their annual Past Forward Award. Inspired by automotive nameplates and the spirit of innovation, House Industries’ three-dimensional lettering sculpture for the Past Forward Award celebrates tradition while epitomizing the ingenuity embodied in each recipient’s work.

Presented each year at the Detroit Autorama, Past Forward is awarded to the builder who most creatively combines tradition with inventiveness while exhibiting a highly skilled technique and maintaining the whimsical “run what you brung” attitude that defines hot rodding culture. Held every year since 1953, Autorama is one of the longest running indoor automotive shows in the world.

House Industries started the project with an exhaustive series of sketches with the goal of creating a balanced lettering lockup that could then be fabricated in three dimensions. Expert sheet metal workers then cut out the lettering shape, hand formed the deep dimension and silver soldered the final assembly. At approximately 16 inches wide, five inches tall and four inches deep, the award is compact enough to hoist over a victor’s head but features enough dimensional presence to earn permanent visibility in a garage or trophy case.

“House Industries has a unique understanding of illustrated letterforms and has been a longstanding ambassador of automotive culture,” Marc Greuther, chief curator and senior director of historical resources at The Henry Ford. “We couldn’t think of better hands than those of House Industries’ artists to bring the Past Forward Award to life.”

The exhibit will run form May 27-Sep 4th, 2017.

More info about the exhibit at The Henry Ford website.
